XRHex Lite robot grows a tail, always lands on its feet video

By far the greatest challenge for robots with legs is staying upright when the going gets rough. A team at the University of Pennsylvania's Kod*lab has a hunch that we don't need extra smarts to make that happen -- just an extra appendage. The upgraded X-RHex Lite (XRL) carries a tail that will swing in the right direction to keep the robot upright if it's caught out by a fall, much like a cat. That's impressive for a nearly 18-pound robot (the previous Tailbot was 0.4 pounds), but we're pretty sure no feline has six springy legs; the XRL can crash to the ground and still get back up like it ain't no thing, which gives it a fudge factor others don't have. We don't know if the hexapod critter will lead to more than further experiments. If there are fewer stuck rovers on future exploration missions, though, we'll know who to thank.

Cell receptor has proclivity for T helper 9 cells, airway inflammation

ScienceDaily (July 29, 2012) ? A research team led by Xian Chang Li, MD, PhD, Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) Transplantation Research Center, has shed light on how a population of lymphocytes, called CD4+ T cells, mature into various subsets of adult T helper cells. In particular, the team uncovered that a particular cell surface molecule, known as OX40, is a powerful inducer of new T helper cells that make copious amounts of interleukin-9 (IL-9) (and therefore called TH9 cells) in vitro; such TH9 cells are responsible for ongoing inflammation in the airways in the lungs in vivo.

The study will be published online in Nature Immunology on July 29, 2012.

In their studies, the researchers found that mice with hyper-active OX40 activities had signs of tissue inflammation, particularly in tissues lining the airway. A high amount of cells -- as much as 30 percent -- in these tissues were mucin-producing cells. Mucin-producing cells produce gel-like secretions that, when combined with other secretions, can form mucus or saliva.

The results mirrored previous studies of mice who over expressed IL-9 in the lung airways. Results from additional experiments confirmed that OX40 triggers both TH9 cell and IL-9 production, thereby leading to airway inflammation.

"These findings may have broad impact on how to treat chronic inflammation, such as allergic inflammation and chronic allograft rejection after transplantation, since the inflammatory texture organized by TH9 cells tends to be different and ongoing." said Li.

In addition to this translational finding, Li and his team made strides in better understanding OX40's role in the molecular mechanisms of the pathway responsible for TH9 cell induction.

According to Li, the revelation that OX40 promotes TH9 cells through TRAF6 (a protein that mediates cell signaling) and the activation of a non-canonical NF-kB pathway will point to new opportunities in drug discovery and development in treatment of TH9-related diseases.

Death no deterrent for S.African gem diggers

The man slips the plastic pouch of gems into his mouth, an illicit haul from the sandy deposits scattered among the mountains of South Africa's diamond coast.

"It's my safe," he explains, sliding the stash back along the inside of his cheek.

The group of diggers are waiting for the cover of darkness to make another raid on a disused mine, opposite their make-shift camp, where 10 miners died in an avalanche three months ago.

Illegal miners in South Africa are ready to risk death to chase a share of the mineral riches that shaped the continent's biggest economy.

In sparsely populated Namaqualand, where the famed gem deposits run along the icy Atlantic Ocean to the Namibian border, diamond giant De Beers was once the top employer, providing 3,000 jobs and building two towns with recreation halls, a golf course and schools, to house its staff.

But its mines were halted in 2008 and the company's Namaqualand operations are in the final stages of a 225 million rand ($27 million, 22 million euro) sell-off after years of retrenchments.

The slowdown has emptied out the private mining towns, but has lured growing numbers of diggers from the area's other small settlements into the abandoned fields.

"I can say that more than 60 percent of the active workforce are involved in the informal diamond trade," said Andy Pienaar, of the social outreach office in Komaggas, one of the few small villages in the mining area.

"There was sort of a blessing from the community that 'people, you may go'" dig, he added.

"It was about survival. It was about sustaining and we're not talking about high life standards, we're talking about just basically survival."

Komaggas has little sign of gem wealth along dirt roads that wind past humble homes where many residents survive on government welfare payments.

But one local buyer, who also digs with a team who share the profits, estimates that he has made about 400,000 rand since he started digging three years ago.

"It changed my life completely. I don't even mind about looking for a job now because I was running around Cape Town, Johannesburg, looking for a job -- there's no need now, I've got a job now," he told AFP.

"I'm not a rich man but I can support my family each and every month."

With some of the world's richest mineral reserves, mining and its knock-on industries contributed nearly 20 percent of GDP in 2010. Illegal mining losses represent a tiny fraction of that, but were still estimated at five billion rand four years ago.

Among the most popular targets for illegal miners are the gold industry's disused mine shafts.

But such shafts see regular fatalities from working in unsafe conditions. In Namaqualand, the diggers went underground, into the sandy layers usually mined in open pits, which eventually turned into a graveyard when the tunnels collapsed.

"It's having quite a big impact on us as a business, but one of the biggest concerns we face around illegal mining is the safety issue associated with illegal diamond mining," said De Beers spokesman Innocent Mabusela.

"We would like to see tougher penalties," he added.

The Namaqualand diggers are only fined 300 rand for trespassing if caught in the mines.

Diamond output is slowing -- to nearly nine million carts in 2010 from more than 15 million five years earlier -- but the country's deposits which produced famed rocks such as the giant Cullinan diamond are still yielding.

Two years ago, South African gems brought in the fourth highest values in the world: 15 percent of the $12 billion worldwide production.

There is talk of "millions" being made in a boom in the area from January until the May accident, with the fatal Bontekoe site drawing hundreds of miners who used to queue to get into an underground cave and tunnels.

"It's very difficult and dangerous, you can be murdered in the process," said a female buyer who only wanted to be known as Risa.

"If somebody knows you've got diamonds, they might follow you and try to get them. If you resist, they can kill you to get them," she said.

Despite South Africa's diamond trade regulations, a rock can be easily sold on the black market.

But beyond the profits, the locals also feel a strong sense of entitlement to the land that predates the arrival of white prospectors in the late 1920s.

South Africa's apartheid past handed control of the country's resources to whites and only 8.9 percent of mines had shifted ownership by 2009.

"De Beers occupies our land and should give it back to us," said Pienaar.

"We do not want to be slaves on our own land any more. We don't just want to be workers, we want to be owners. We want to be part of the decision making process."

The community plans to lodge a claim to the land and there is also bitterness that the shine of gems has not reached Komaggas.

"Nothing has happened here," said William Cloete, who runs a licensed mine next to Bontekoe.

"All our diamonds, the billions, are out of our land.... But we're sitting with nothing -- an empty town with nothing."

NBC draws ire for not streaming Olympics ceremony

NEW YORK (AP) ? A look at media coverage of the Summer Olympics:

Even before NBC signed on for its coverage of the Summer Olympics in London on Friday, it drew a storm online for its decision not to stream the opening ceremony digitally. Despite the grumbling, it's a decision that may pay off for the network.

NBC Universal has promised to stream live online every athletic competition in the Summer Games for the first time. But the opening and closing ceremonies were always planned to be shown on tape delay, a network spokesman said. Coverage began shortly before 8 p.m. on the East Coast, about the same time that spectators in London ? which is five hours ahead of New York time ? were filing out of Olympic Stadium.

NBC Sports spokesman Christopher McCloskey said the ceremonies "are complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online because they require context, which our award-winning production team will provide for the large prime-time audiences that gather together to watch them."

Many people took to Twitter to complain Friday that they felt cheated by the decision, and provided online links to other outlets, like the BBC, that were streaming the ceremony online.

The website for Business Insider said "boo" about NBC's decision and offered two links. The popular sports website Deadspin posted a link to the BBC stream and urged its followers to watch it as a way of sending NBC an obscene gesture.

CNN's Piers Morgan, who was tweeting details about the ceremony in the late afternoon, tweeted shortly before 7:30 p.m. ET: "Laughable that America is yet to start watching the Olympic ceremony on TV. Seriously."

But NBC executives will gladly trade the complaints for a repeat of what happened four years ago in Beijing.

The network similarly offered the opening ceremony then on tape delay and there were many complaints, although less widespread because of a less wired world. But all the talk about the ceremony in the hours before it was televised created a buzz, and the 34.9 million people who watched it was the largest opening ceremony audience in 12 years. NBC makes most of its money through its prime-time advertising, and the strong opening night ratings set a tone that continued throughout the Games.

Boost Sales Through the Roof Using An Autoresponder | Scarsongs

If you want to create a longer term online business, an autoresponder is a tool you really can?t afford to ignore, as this will give you a lot more options when it comes to email marketing. People who haven?t been involved with internet marketing very long often hesitate before getting involved with autoresponders, thinking that it?s too advanced or complex for them. But guess what -autoresponders are really simple to use; they?re not rocket science. You only have to decide what kind of campaign you want to create and start composing some messages.

It?s important to figure out which solution to opt for before you start using an autoresponder service. It is highly recommended that you start out subscribing to an autoresponder service rather than hosting it on your server. Managing your own autoresponder when you are first starting out can be a headache. You are outsourcing the management of your autoresponder when you subscribe to a service such as Aweber and GetResponse. This is your most effective way to utilize an autoresponder without having to worry about your email being delivered on time. Secondly, don?t just assume that your subscriber/prospect would know everything about you. You can decide what to reveal, but information like the name of your business and its url, a phone number and a contact email address can make a big difference. It?s only natural that people will be more comfortable about buying something from you when they know a little bit about you first. This is a basic principle of all marketing, that before you can gain loyal customers you have to build some degree of trust. Ultimately, how responsive your list is depends on the kind of bond you create with it; so use every chance to strengthen it.

Lastly, if you?re not automating your email marketing with your autoresponder, you?re not taking advantage of its main benefit. What really makes autoresponders such as Aweber so powerful is the ability they give you to create email messages that can be sent out precisely when you want your subscribers to receive them. The key to getting the results you want from your prospects is repetition and sending out a variety of messages, and your autoresponder gives you an easy way to accomplish this.

So when you get new subscribers, you don?t want to only send them one email, but a whole series of them, which you?ve prepared and loaded in your autoresponder. You have to make the initial effort of writing these emails, but after that the hard work is done and the autoresponder handles everything. Autoresponders, then, are a tool every internet marketer should take advantage of, as they are one of the best ways to connect with your target audience. Do your research in terms of keywords, products and your target market so that when you set up your autoresponder campaigns, you?ll know there?s a strong demand for what you have. The above principles can help you get off the ground and begin taking full advantage of autoresponders so you can start building your list.

Celebrate National Tequila Day with Low Calorie Alcoholic Drink ...

Happy National Tequila Day! Too bad it?s on a Tuesday this year (it?s always July 24th)?But this tequila-girl is ready to celebrate?without breaking the calorie bank. If you read this blog you know I love margaritas but they can be a calorie killer, on average 500 ?for frozen, which is why I?ve rounded up some of my favorite low calorie margarita recipes. Yes, the research for this was very grueling. And for those of you who don?t love the margs the way I do, I?ve included a few fantastic tequila recipes that don?t necessarily involve lime juice and a salt rim. Or you can always enjoy tequila straight up like we did on Cinco de Mayo (pictured left). A one ounce shot will set you back just 69 calories. ?Happy National Tequila Day!

Low Calorie Margarita Recipes:

The Cadillac Rio Margarita
Fresh lime juice and orange liqueur keep the calories down on this twist to the classic margarita.

Jack Rabbit Margarita
Made with carrot juice this margarita is packed with vitamins A, C, and potassium. One jack rabbit will cost you 162 calories and 17g carbs. Be sure to sip it slow!?

Cherry Margarita?
This recipe came our way after a visit from Montel Williams with his HealthMaster. You don?t need a fancy blender though, any one will do to make this 132 calorie margarita!

Farmer?s Market Margarita?
Packed with fresh cucumber, cilantro, and spicy jalapeno the farmer?s market margarita is the nutritional winner clocking in at just 99 calories. A margarita under 100? That is a happy National Tequila Day!

Raw Margarita
Some may say cocktails can?t be raw (alcohol is distilled, read: boiled) but all the mixers are in this one! Raw agave gives this margarita it?s signature sweetness.

Cran-Merry Margarita
In case you want to celebrate out of season, this festive take on the margarita makes sipping the summertime cocktail acceptable in December! Plus, at 159 calories it?s much lighter than eggnog!

Greenhouse Sage Margarita
Tequila may make your recollections hazy but sage is a known memory enhancer making it the perfect compliment to this herbal margarita.

Non-margarita drinks for celebrating National Tequila Day:
Jalisco Bramble?
Usually made with gin, this cocktail gets its name from the region of Mexico where tequila is made. At 120 calories a pop, there?s no better way to celebrate National Tequila Day!

Slender Sauzita?
Made with agave nectar and fresh juices this tequila cocktail is quick and easy to make?even if you?ve already had a few!?

Italian Summer Sipper?
My Italian side is in love! Basil, balsamic, muddled strawberries, and tequila for just 100 calories? Say no more!

Skinny Sour Sauzita
If you don?t like margaritas because they are too sweet this sour twist to the classic tequila drink may be for you.

Personally I?ll be celebrating National Tequila Day with a raw margarita in hand?but I?ll also have a glass of water in my other hand! Be sure to stay hydrated and eat your greens, it helps negate all the acidity of the alcohol, and be sure to read up on these four hangover cures that work before you get to the point of one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor!

As an editor at SHAPE I have the chance to learn about the healthiest ways to cook, eat, and live from all sorts of experts but I?m also a single girl living in NYC with a busy schedule, active social life, and chocolate cravings. I?m here to share what works for me?and where I need a little help from you.

How Businesses Can Get Consumers to Share Their Data

By Thor Olavsrud
CIO.com
July 23, 2012

FRAMINGHAM - U.S. consumers are know that their personal data is valuable to companies, and they?re not afraid to share as long as they receive something in the exchange and the information isn?t too personal, according to a new study by PwC.

?People are willing to share personal information if they get benefit from it,? says Mark Lobel, principal with PwC Advisory Services.

PwC reports that it used a two-phase program to capture the data. It started with a survey of 1,000 U.S. participants and then went into more depth with a series of follow-up focus groups.

PwC found that 73 percent of respondents were willing to share their information depending on what they would receive in return, and the number increased to 76 percent when offered free benefits, like free entertainment and media services. But consumers become increasingly more tight-fisted with information the more personal it gets.

Between 81 percent and 93 percent of participants were highly willing to share information about their gender and marital status. Between 53 percent and 65 percent of respondents were highly willing to share information about their household computer, TV programming preferences, and online movie/video/gaming patterns and preferences. And 41 percent to 50 percent were highly willing to share information on their online shopping patterns, name, household income, birth date or email address.

Consumers Get Reticent as Information Gets More Personal

But the numbers tail off dramatically from there. Only 30 percent were highly willing to share information about their current location or employment history; and only 11 percent to 17 percent were highly willing to share information about their Web browsing history, cell phone number, medical/financial information and mobile SMS details. Things like mobile call history are in a virtual lockbox, with only 4 percent to 7 percent highly willing to share. Respondents showed the most sensitivity to their social security numbers: only 3 percent were highly willing to share SSNs.

Lobel explains that so long as consumers perceive information as less personal and more anonymous?like broad demographic data and use of media content?they are willing to share. But anything that might compromise their private interests sets off alarm bells.

?I don?t see date of birth bothering me,? says one consumer, aged 18 to 34, interviewed by PwC. ?Yearly income, it doesn?t even have to be true. What I say it is. Obviously, we just went through the email address. It means nothing to me. Phone numbers, I would be more wary of giving my cell phone number. I give them a house number all the time. No one answers that. It?s just cell phones are direct to you.?

Best Practices for Getting Consumers to Share Their Data

Make the consumer feel in control. Businesses need to be explicit and direct in stating what personal information will be used, how it will be collected and what the consumer will get in return, Lobel says. When consumers perceive transparency and have the option to control what and how information will be shared (such as through privacy settings), they are more willing to share information.

Remind consumers of the value of a big-company brand. Consumers are more willing to share information with well-known and ?big-name? companies. If you have a big brand behind you, remind consumers about the stability and trust a big-name company represents by educating them about how you protect their information and how you prevent security breaches.

Think about opt-in/opt-out procedures. With new privacy regulations looming, consider the benefits of a collective opt-in/opt-out process driven by the industry. The vast majority of consumers want to be able to manage their personal preferences for all mobile and Internet services in one location.

Prepare to give back. Consumers understand their information is valuable to you, and they are focused on the benefits they will receive by sharing. ?Companies have to be prepared to give back to the consumer in exchange for having the consumer share their personal information,? Lobel says. ?Consumers are focused on the benefits they receive.? While consumers love free services and products, they are also willing to share information in return for non-monetary benefits, he notes. Companies can entice consumers to share more information by promoting the non-monetary benefits consumers will receive in turn.

Target marketing and communication to specific segments. ?Companies should consider slightly different marketing strategies for the younger versus older consumer segments,? Lobel says, explaining that both segments have distinct and consistent differences in attitudes and behaviors related to sharing their information. Younger consumers have grown up in the digital age and are used to sharing information. Older consumers are generally more cautious, and you will need to ensure the perceived benefit outweighs any potential risks.

When it comes to mobile marketing strategies, offer greater incentives. Consumers consider their mobile phones their lifelines-extremely personal and private. SMS messages they receive are supposed to be from friends and family, not for business promotional purposes. ?Because consumers want to be in control, if a company wants to do a mobile marketing strategy, they?re going to have to offer more value, more incentives,? Lobel says. ?Getting text messages every time I walk past a store is intrusive: I turn off my email; I don?t turn off my cell phone.?

Use email to communicate with consumers. Consumers are very comfortable sharing their email addresses, and they specifically look for emails from companies when they are ready to make a purchase. Email is the safest means for communicating with customers.

Ten Signs Your Roof Needs Repair or Replacement

Roofs protect homes and commercial buildings from rain, snow and wind. They are an essential component of a building, and there are a few signs that make it easy to see if repairs are required. The particular type of structure often determines the roofing material. Residential buildings are usually covered with asphalt shingles. These are designed for decades of reliable service. Shingles should last for at least 20 years. Symptoms of leaks are visible on the exterior and interior of a home. Locating the problem may require professional assistance, but most homeowners can easily solve minor issues.

Stains and Discolorations One of the first signs of roof trouble is stains and discolorations. These may be found on the entire home or only in portions. The stains can be any color, but they are usually darker than the original roof. Stains can be a sign of several things but are often caused by mold or algae. The algae will slowly eat at the granules on the roof and should be removed. Products are designed for homeowners to use and easily attach to the end of a garden hose. Spraying the roof applies the product and kills the algae. This should remove the problem, but multiple treatments may be necessary.

Curling Shingles Curling shingles are easily seen from the ground, especially on a steep roof. The bottom edges of each shingle course will slowly curl up, and there may be a bubble under the shingle. This is a sign that the entire roof should be replaced. Over time, the UV rays from the sun damage shingles, and the life expectancy is about 20 years. Some products are designed for longer, and many companies make materials that are good for 40 years.

Interior Stains and Mold Leaks can be found in the home too. Leaks will usually cause discolorations on ceilings and walls and are most common around chimneys or bathroom fixtures. Skylights may also leak, and condensation is another big problem with these products. If a homeowner sees any signs of discolorations, they should call a professional roofing contractor. Often, minor damages will quickly compound and lead to huge repair bills. Addressing the problem early is the proactive way to limit expenses.

Attic Space Attic space can also be a great place to look for leaks. Checking after high wind storms and heavy rain is the best way to find any problems. Many people rely on a flashlight to help them see in their attic. Starting at the ridge line, the flashlight beams can be played over the plywood, and special attention should focus on the rafters. Water will usually follow the rafters, and it is visible along the top sides of lumber.

Roofing keeps homes dry, and there are several signs of trouble. Some issues are easily repaired, and minor leaks and wind-blown shingles can be replaced by professionals or homeowners. Serious signs of damage may require a new roof, and curling shingles are an omen that usually shows roofs have reached their life expectancy.

Home Improvements - The Increasing popularity of external home ...

Internal home improvement projects such as painting and decorating living rooms and bedrooms, tiling bathrooms, replacing carpets and flooring right up to the installation of brand new top of the range fitted kitchens, bathroom suites and new kitchen appliances have always been the most popular types of improvements undertaken by people in the UK, In recent years, however this has changed and external home improvements are now overtaking as the most popular type of home improvements even though they cost considerably more than their internal counterparts.

So, if these external home improvement projects cost considerably more then what is the attraction and why are people choosing them over simpler more cost efficient internal improvements? The main reason for this change is the current economic downturn and the poor state of the housing market in the UK due to the recession, where as a majority of internal projects were undertaken as an aid to selling a house, more expensive external projects are generally undertaken to improve the quality of living for the current homeowners who have decided to stay put and improve rather than more house and upscale.

When doing home improvements or home remodels for one's own benefit the emphasis seems to be on quality and benefits rather than getting a budget job done for the minimum amount of money, so many people are now choosing the most attractive and beneficial options meaning that budget, unskilled, one man band type outfits that advertise in the local press are losing out to the larger better known home improvement groups with an army of estimators, fitters, installers and not to mention satisfied customers. Apart from the always popular and sometimes necessary replacement windows and doors, the second most popular external home improvement project at present seems to be driveways, paths and patios, as there is nothing more satisfying than driving up a beautiful driveway to your home, both for yourself and your visitors who will be equally impressed, but even with this project there are a couple of options depending on your preference. Forget tarmac, it's dated and unattractive and best left for the public roads. You have two other options, one is pattern imprinted concrete and the other is block paving.

Pattern imprinted concrete driveways can be any style and colour you want it to be, within reason, and for a professional driveway company the process is quick and the results are durable and long lasting, imprinted concrete isn't just standard concrete, it is a specially manufactured mix allowing for flexibility and durability, finished with an acrylic sealer . The results are truly impressive, giving you a beautiful, weed free, maintenance free driveway that will last for years. Some people do prefer the more traditional block paving, which when done correctly and by a professional driveway company can still look very beautiful, the benefit of block paving is that unlike pattern imprinted concrete that requires a dry day for laying , block paving can still be laid in adverse weather conditions, the drawback of block paving is that over time you will need to weed between blocks and sometime a block can become loose due to underground movement, a phenomenon that doesn't have an effect on imprinted concrete due it's electric properties and way it is laid to compensate for movement . If your still undecided you should probably have a survey done (most professional driveway companies offer free surveys) to see which option is the best for you.

Express Home Improvements Group offer a range of services including a unique online conservatory quote system, roof coating, pattern imprinted concrete and more.

Cybersecurity: Does Senate deal on legislation compromise defenses?

Cybersecurity hawks agreed to voluntary measures instead of government mandates. Privacy advocates are pleased, but others say compromise bill doesn't protect vital national assets.?

By Mark Clayton,?Staff writer / July 20, 2012

In a desperate bid to get a cybersecurity bill passed before Congress adjourns in August, Senate hawks seeking to protect vital national assets like the power grid blinked ? offering up compromise legislation that substitutes voluntary measures for government mandates.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Under the compromise, unveiled late Thursday, operators of gas pipelines, refineries, water supply systems and other physical assets vital to modern life in the US would voluntarily submit their computer networks to testing by the Department of Homeland Security. In return, they would get protection from financial liability in case of a devastating cyberattack.

Key to the revamped version of the Cybersecurity Act is a public-private partnership ? a multi-agency National Cybersecurity Council ? chaired by the secretary of Homeland Security. It would assess risks and vulnerabilities, but allow industry to recommend voluntary practices to deal with cyberthreats.

Standards would be reviewed, modified or approved by the council. Industry could also show their systems to be secure through self-certification or third-party assessment. The companies would then be eligible for liability protection.

"We are going to try carrots instead of sticks as we begin to improve our cyberdefenses," Sen. Joe Lieberman (I) of Connecticut, a co-sponsor of the legislation, said in a statement. "This compromise bill will depend on incentives rather than mandatory regulations to improve America's cybersecurity. If that doesn't work, a future Congress will undoubtedly come back and adopt a more coercive system."

While he acknowledged the bill previously introduced in February by himself and Sen. Susan Collins (R) of Maine "is stronger," Lieberman said the new "compromise will significantly strengthen the cybersecurity of the nation?s most critical infrastructure and with it our national and economic security."

But others said the compromise Cybersecurity Act ? which is aimed at wooing votes away from an all-volunteer cybersecurity bill offered by Sen. John McCain ? is now too weak to truly protect the nation's key computer networks, because it's voluntary.

"The best thing you can say about this new bill is that it doesn't do much harm ? but it also doesn't make things any better," says James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. "There are no new authorities and everything in the bill could already be done under an executive order."

Why Gay Parents May Be the Best Parents ? Male Express

Gay marriage, and especially gay parenting, has been in the cross hairs in recent days.

On Jan. 6, Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum told a New Hampshire audience that children are better off with a father in prison than being raised in a home with lesbian parents and no father at all. And last Monday (Jan. 9), Pope Benedict called gay marriage a threat ?to the future of humanity itself,? citing the need for children to have heterosexual homes.

But research on families headed by gays and lesbians doesn?t back up these dire assertions. In fact, in some ways, gay parents may bring talents to the table that straight parents don?t.

Gay parents ?tend to be more motivated, more committed than heterosexual parents on average, because they chose to be parents,? said Abbie Goldberg, a psychologist at Clark University in Massachusetts who researches gay and lesbian parenting. Gays and lesbians rarely become parents by accident, compared with an almost 50 percent accidental pregnancy rate among heterosexuals, Goldberg said. ?That translates to greater commitment on average and more involvement.?

And while research indicates that kids of gay parents show few differences in achievement, mental health, social functioning and other measures, these kids may have the advantage of open-mindedness, tolerance and role models for equitable relationships, according to some research. Not only that, but gays and lesbians are likely to provide homes for difficult-to-place children in the foster system, studies show. (Of course, this isn?t to say that heterosexual parents can?t bring these same qualities to the parenting table.)

Adopting the neediest

Gay adoption recently caused controversy in Illinois, where Catholic Charities adoption services decided in November to cease offering services because the state refused funding unless the groups agreed not to discriminate against gays and lesbians. Rather than comply, Catholic Charities closed up shop.

Catholic opposition aside, research suggests that gay and lesbian parents are actually a powerful resource for kids in need of adoption. According to a 2007 report by the Williams Institute and the Urban Institute, 65,000 kids were living with adoptive gay parents between 2000 and 2002, with another 14,000 in foster homes headed by gays and lesbians. (There are currently more than 100,000 kids in foster care in the U.S.)

An October 2011 report by Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute found that, of gay and lesbian adoptions at more than 300 agencies, 10 percent of the kids placed were older than 6 ? typically a very difficult age to adopt out. About 25 percent were older than 3. Sixty percent of gay and lesbian couples adopted across races, which is important given that minority children in the foster system tend to linger. More than half of the kids adopted by gays and lesbians had special needs.

The report didn?t compare the adoption preferences of gay couples directly with those of heterosexual couples, said author David Brodzinsky, research director at the Institute and co-editor of ?Adoption By Lesbians and Gay Men: A New Dimension of Family Diversity? (Oxford University Press, 2011). But research suggests that gays and lesbians are more likely than heterosexuals to adopt older, special-needs and minority children, he said. Part of that could be their own preferences, and part could be because of discrimination by adoption agencies that puts more difficult children with what caseworkers see as ?less desirable? parents.

No matter how you slice it, Brodzinsky told LiveScience, gays and lesbians are highly interested in adoption as a group. The 2007 report by the Urban Institute also found that more than half of gay men and 41 percent of lesbians in the U.S. would like to adopt. That adds up to an estimated 2 million gay people who are interested in adoption. It?s a huge reservoir of potential parents who could get kids out of the instability of the foster system, Brodzinsky said.

?When you think about the 114,000 children who are freed for adoption who continue to live in foster care and who are not being readily adopted, the goal is to increase the pool of available, interested and well-trained individuals to parent these children,? Brodzinsky said.

In addition, Brodzinsky said, there?s evidence to suggest that gays and lesbians are especially accepting of open adoptions, where the child retains some contact with his or her birth parents. And the statistics bear out that birth parents often have no problem with their kids being raised by same-sex couples, he added.

?Interestingly, we find that a small percentage, but enough to be noteworthy, [of birth mothers] make a conscious decision to place with gay men, so they can be the only mother in their child?s life,? Brodzinsky said.

Good parenting

Research has shown that the kids of same-sex couples ? both adopted and biological kids ? fare no worse than the kids of straight couples on mental health, social functioning, school performance and a variety of other life-success measures.

In a 2010 review of virtually every study on gay parenting, New York University sociologist Judith Stacey and University of Southern California sociologist Tim Biblarz found no differences between children raised in homes with two heterosexual parents and children raised with lesbian parents.

?There?s no doubt whatsoever from the research that children with two lesbian parents are growing up to be just as well-adjusted and successful? as children with a male and a female parent,? Stacey told LiveScience.

There is very little research on the children of gay men, so Stacey and Biblarz couldn?t draw conclusions on those families. But Stacey suspects that gay men ?will be the best parents on average,? she said.

That?s a speculation, she said, but if lesbian parents have to really plan to have a child, it?s even harder for gay men. Those who decide to do it are thus likely to be extremely committed, Stacey said. Gay men may also experience fewer parenting conflicts, she added. Most lesbians use donor sperm to have a child, so one mother is biological and the other is not, which could create conflict because one mother may feel closer to the kid.

?With gay men, you don?t have that factor,? she said. ?Neither of them gets pregnant, neither of them breast-feeds, so you don?t have that asymmetry built into the relationship.?

The bottom line, Stacey said, is that people who say children need both a father and a mother in the home are misrepresenting the research, most of which compares children of single parents to children of married couples. Two good parents are better than one good parent, Stacey said, but one good parent is better than two bad parents. And gender seems to make no difference. While you do find broad differences between how men and women parent on average, she said, there is much more diversity within the genders than between them.

?Two heterosexual parents of the same educational background, class, race and religion are more like each other in the way they parent than one is like all other women and one is like all other men,? she said. [6 Gender Myths Busted]

Nurturing tolerance

In fact, the only consistent places you find differences between how kids of gay parents and kids of straight parents turn out are in issues of tolerance and open-mindedness, according to Goldberg. In a paper published in 2007 in the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, Goldberg conducted in-depth interviews with 46 adults with at least one gay parent. Twenty-eight of them spontaneously offered that they felt more open-minded and empathetic than people not raised in their situation.

?These individuals feel like their perspectives on family, on gender, on sexuality have largely been enhanced by growing up with gay parents,? Goldberg said.

One 33-year-old man with a lesbian mother told Goldberg, ?I feel I?m a more open, well-rounded person for having been raised in a nontraditional family, and I think those that know me would agree. My mom opened me up to the positive impact of differences in people.?

Children of gay parents also reported feeling less stymied by gender stereotypes than they would have been if raised in straight households. That?s likely because gays and lesbians tend to have more egalitarian relationships than straight couples, Goldberg said. They?re also less wedded to rigid gender stereotypes themselves.

?Men and women felt like they were free to pursue a wide range of interests,? Goldberg said. ?Nobody was telling them, ?Oh, you can?t do that, that?s a boy thing,? or ?That?s a girl thing.??

Same-sex acceptance

If same-sex marriage does disadvantage kids in any way, it has nothing to do with their parent?s gender and everything to do with society?s reaction toward the families, said Indiana University sociologist Brian Powell, the author of ?Counted Out:?Same-Sex Relations?and Americans? Definitions of Family? (Russell Sage Foundation, 2010).

?Imagine being a child living in a state with two parents in which, legally, only one parent is allowed to be their parent,? Powell told LiveScience. ?In that situation, the family is not seen as authentic or real by others. That would be the disadvantage.?

In her research, Goldberg has found that many children of gay and lesbian parents say that more acceptance of gay and lesbian families, not less, would help solve this problem.

In a study published online Jan. 11, 2012, in the Journal of Marriage and Family, Goldberg interviewed another group of 49 teenagers and young adults with gay parents and found that not one of them rejected the right of gays and lesbians to marry. Most cited legal benefits as well as social acceptance.

?I was just thinking about this with a couple of friends and just was in tears thinking about how different my childhood might have been had same-sex marriage been legalized 25 years ago,? a 23-year-old man raised by a lesbian couple told Goldberg. ?The cultural, legal status of same-sex couples impacts the family narratives of same-sex families ? how we see ourselves in relation to the larger culture, whether we see ourselves as accepted or outsiders.?

(AP) ? Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has resigned as a director of a number of News Corp. boards overseeing his Britain newspapers, a spokeswoman confirmed Saturday. He also quit from some of the media company's subsidiary boards in the United States.

Murdoch stepped down this past week as a director of NI Group, Times Newspaper Holdings and News Corp. Investments in the U.K., said Daisy Dunlop, spokeswoman for News Corp.'s British arm, News International. The companies oversee The Sun, The Times, and The Sunday Times.

It was not immediately clear which of News Corp.'s U.S. boards Murdoch had left. Britain's Telegraph newspaper, which first reported the news late Saturday, said those details had not yet been disclosed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

News International sought to play down the significance of the resignations, saying in a statement that "this is nothing more than a corporate housecleaning exercise prior to the company split."

That was a reference to News Corp.'s announcement June 28 that it would separate its publishing business, which includes The Wall Street Journal, from its much more profitable media and entertainment business ? forming two distinct, publicly traded companies. Under those proposed changes, Murdoch, 81, will chair both of the companies, although he would continue as chief executive of the media and entertainment company only.

Saturday's announcement suggests that Murdoch may be distancing himself from his British newspaper interests, which have been shaken to the core by a widespread phone hacking scandal.

The scandal erupted anew last year when it emerged that Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid had systematically hacked voicemails of politicians and celebrities. The revelations have rocked Britain's establishment and triggered three parallel police investigations that have resulted in more than 40 arrests. Illegal eavesdropping allegations at the News of the World led to the resignation of Rebekah Brooks, then-CEO of News International, who has been accused of perverting justice in the scandal.

Murdoch and his son, James, both had to testify in front of a parliamentary committee probing the allegations. The committee declared the elder Murdoch unfit to run an international business.

James Murdoch had already resigned as chairman of News International.
