Fish Biologist in Vancouver, Canada

General Description: Fish Biologists are responsible for organizing and implementing freshwater fish assessment and monitoring programs, including study design, statistical analysis and reporting; ensuring environmental compliance of project activities with all relevant provincial and federal environmental regulations.

Location: Vancouver, BC

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in field programs to conduct, and direct research activities on fish health, physiology, and genetics.
  • Recommend and implement programs for population monitoring, habitat improvement, resource planning, and risk mitigation.
  • Perform statistical analyses and fieldwork for fishery projects.
  • Conduct assessments and reports on the impact of environmental changes, human activities, and harvesting practices on fish populations and habitats.
  • Provide consultation on fish protection to developers and engineers.
  • Prepare reports on researched results and present recommendations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competencies:

  • Experience in DFO Section 35 (2) Authorization requirements and preparing habitat compensation plans.
  • Have demonstrated project management skills.
  • Research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation and analysis).
  • Problem solving skills (analyze a case or situation and recommending solution(s)).
  • Have excellent communication (verbal and written ? technical or scientific writing).
  • Interpersonal skills ? developing partnerships/networks with other stakeholders.
  • Intermediate computer skills (MS Office).

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must have a diploma, B.Sc. or higher degree in biological sciences and appropriate qualifications for work in either Alberta or BC.
  • Minimum 3 years experience or combination of experience/education.
  • Eligibility for R.P. Bio / P. Biol., or other professional designation.
  • Have experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork; and an ability/interest to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations.
  • Be familiar with the Alberta, British Columbia and Federal regulatory environments for construction projects.

? Have appropriate Health and Safety certification and a current Drivers License.
