How To Live A Luxurious Life Post Retirement

Retirement living homes of today are not like traditional old age homes. Earlier, an old age home would often be the last place of residence than any old person would consider. Many amenities and comforts of modern homes would be missing in such places, but not any more. Retired persons can easily be moved to modern retirement homes, to give them a stress-free future life.

24 hours medical assistance is essential for any old persons. Additionally, personal care is also provided. Localities are built such that banks, local markets, subways and other important conveniences are within a short radius. Safety and security of a retirement home cannot be overlooked.

Retirement is not a time when life should be boring. One should be able to give time to fun activities, and relax without having to bother about household chores. For the same reason, the existence of social communities is important. It is possible to share views with other persons of the same age in the neighborhood. Club houses help such persons to hold community events and engage in healthy interactions. Attached kitchen facilities are also provided in these club houses.

The activities that one wishes to participate in, play a role in deciding which retirement homes to choose. As an example, many luxury homes are located close to golf courses, which would be suitable for many. Retirement opens a whole new world of opportunity, for those who are capable of affording their own homes.

Climate is also an important factor in deciding the location of the retirement home. Some persons would be comfortable in warm weather, while others in cold weather. The distance of the retirement home from the family may also be a factor for some.

Retirement living homes located away from the main city would be preferred by many, particularly due to peaceful environment. Often, such areas would be surrounded by beautiful landscapes with delightful scenic views.

It is often a wise decision to start planning about retirement living homes, before actual retirement. Planning ahead would help in preventing unnecessary wastage of time, and make sure that one accumulates adequate resources before moving into a new home.

Most retired persons would have worked very hard throughout life, such that they would not have to depend on their children. They would have saved enough money to ensure a secure future within reasonable means. But if one can afford it, why not buy luxury homes instead?

Minnesota Vikings Practice and Media AvailabilityGetty Images

Between the time Randy Moss decided that he loves football again and signed with the 49ers, he had plenty to say, via the webcam and microphone on his computer.? Since joining the 49ers, Moss hasn?t had much to say at all.

He participated in a conference call after signing his contract, and he met with the media once during training camp.

Moss otherwise refuses to talk.

He passed again on Tuesday, according to Cam Inman of BayAreaNewsGroup.com.? As to whether Moss will talk in advance of a return visit to the scene of the faux mooning, Moss said, ?Probably not.?

At some point, he probably will.? During the regular season, the NFL requires post-game availability and one other session once per week.? Failure to comply will trigger fines and, over time, increasing discipline.

It?s not the first time Moss has expressed a preference not to talk.? At one point during the 2010 season, Moss was fined $25,000.? He thereafter decided that he would be available for the media, but that he would answer only his own questions.

Of course, the press conference in which Moss said he?d answer only his own questions came one day before he was fired by the Vikings.? After Moss was claimed on waivers by Tennessee, no one really cared much about what he had to say.

And that?s what Moss doesn?t seem to realize.? People want to talk to him because he?s relevant to the game of football.? The reporters are simply the conduit of the fans; Moss probably will figure that out after the reporters ? and the fans ? stop caring about whatever it is that he may have to say.

Sustainable construction: Waste wanted | Eco-Business.com

The Supertrees at Singapore's Gardens by the Bay are made with Holcim high strength green concrete for a reduced carbon footprint. Image: Eco-Business.

The construction industry is scrambling to find sustainable building materials for Asia?s booming cities, and companies are now competing for industrial waste to replace some of the natural resources they consume, say experts.

In Singapore, the lack of natural resources and growing demand for green buildings are driving the hunt for alternative building materials, and several concrete manufacturers have turned to a limited supply of recycled materials and industrial by-products.

One manufacturer that has done so is Holcim Singapore, a subsidiary of the Swiss-headquartered Holcim Group.

?We look for win-win solutions that offer immediate value and provide a commercial advantage,? said managing director Sujit Ghosh in an interview at the firm?s recently opened Centre of Excellence.

Holcim established the new centre with support from Singapore?s Economic Development Board. Its aim is to take products at the research and development stage and turn them into commercial products saleable in Asian market.

/>/>/>/> />

Holcim is no stranger to using recycled materials in its products. In 2007, prompted by the sand crisis (see sidebar), Holcim started using waste collected from Singapore?s shipping industry in the making of its concrete. But first, it had to convince the regulator, Building and Construction Authority (BCA), that such material was safe enough to be allowed in building codes, noted Dr Ghosh.

The new concrete, called Holcim Green, was made from recycled granite from old buildings. Part of the sand needed in the process was also replaced with processed copper slag used by shipyards to clean ships.

Holcim obtained its copper slag by setting up a joint venture with local waste processing firm ecoWise in 2008, but the 400,000 tonnes that Singapore?s shipyards discard annually is only enough for about one month of the manufacturer?s concrete production.

The company produces about 1.5 million cubic metres of concrete each year, of which 5 to 10 per cent is certified green concrete.

Now that copper slag and other alternative materials - such as debris from building demolitions ? have been approved by building regulators, competition for those resources is increasing, said Dr Ghosh.

The firm is currently finalizing plans to use waste materials from Singapore?s waste incinerators, known as incinerator bottom ash.

This waste, of up to half a million tonnes each year, would otherwise end up in the Republic?s only landfill. Semakau Landfill is located off-shore and is currently under expansion so that it can continue to receive waste through at least 2045.

Home-grown Samwoh Group, which specializes in road building and also makes certified green ready-mixed concrete, is another manufacturer recycling waste back into building supplies.

The firm has two plants in Singapore that recycle asphalt and concrete from construction projects.? In 2010, it also built the Samwoh Eco-Green Building following a joint study with BCA and Singapore?s Nanyang Technological University to prove the safety of buildings using high percentages of recycled content. The building was the first in the region to use 100 per cent recycled ingredients for the concrete aggregate, which is the material added to cement and water to make the final product.

A shortage of waste

Holcim?s Dr Ghosh said that if there was an unlimited supply of recycled materials and by-products, the industry could easily replace half of the virgin materials it consumes without affecting the quality of the concrete. However, the available supply of copper slag, construction debris and incinerator bottom ash combined provides only a fraction ? about 10 per cent ? ?of the material Singapore?s building industry needs for concrete, he noted.

?Asia is not going to decrease its insatiable demand to build, so we need to figure out how we can do more with less,? said Dr Ghosh.

To reduce the demand for concrete from the construction industry, Holcim developed an eco-friendly high strength concrete that can decrease the amount of material needed for building projects by up to 50 per cent.

Two years ago, Holcim again worked with BCA to amend building codes that allow the use of high strength concrete, which was already used in Europe and Japan.

Since then, the firm has seen increased interest from builders that want to lower their carbon footprint and increase available floor area by using less bulky concrete structures, noted Dr Ghosh.

He predicted that over the next five years, the company?s high strength concrete could grow to 20 to 30 per cent of its overall production now that BCA is encouraging the use of such materials to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings.

While green concrete and green building designs are important to reducing the building industry?s environmental impacts, they are only part of the solution, he said.

The industry has done a good job focusing on design and energy efficiency, but has only just begun to map out the overall environmental impacts of the construction process, he explained.

He has seen some progress, including growing emphasis on productivity and sustainable materials, and better sorting of demolition debris. Three years ago, contractors sent stones from demolition sites to the landfill with the rest of the debris, but now they are all reused, he noted.

However, Dr Ghosh said building developers will need a bigger push, possibly in the form of a carbon price, to fully address the impacts of a project from start to finish.

Nanoscale Device Can Weigh a Single Molecule

DevotedSkeptic writes "Caltech scientists have created an ultra-sensitive device that can weigh an individual molecule for the first time. The device is invisible to the naked eye and vibrates at a specific frequency based on the molecule resting on top of its bridge like structure." More in the Caltech press release. This is an improvement on a design from 2009 that also could theoretically weigh a single atom, but in practice could not because the position along the "bridge" affected the result. Now the researchers have figured out how to measure the position of the molecule on the bridge and compensate. The device is built using semiconductor fabrication techniques "...making it easy to mass-produce. That's crucial, since instruments that are efficient enough for doctors or biologists to use will need arrays of hundreds to tens of thousands of these bridges working in parallel. 'With the incorporation of the devices that are made by techniques for large-scale integration, we're well on our way to creating such instruments,' Roukes says. This new technology, the researchers say, will enable the development of a new generation of mass-spectrometry instruments." The full article is behind a paywall unfortunately.

Manipulating the microbiome could help manage weight

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Vaccines and antibiotics may someday join caloric restriction or bariatric surgery as a way to regulate weight gain, according to a new study focused on the interactions between diet, the bacteria that live in the bowel, and the immune system.

Bacteria in the intestine play a crucial role in digestion. They provide enzymes necessary for the uptake of many nutrients, synthesize certain vitamins and boost absorption of energy from food. Fifty years ago, farmers learned that by tweaking the microbial mix in their livestock with low-dose oral antibiotics, they could accelerate weight gain. More recently, scientists found that mice raised in a germ-free environment, and thus lacking gut microbes, do not put on extra weight, even on a high-fat diet.

In a study, published Aug. 26 in the journal Nature Immunology, a research team based at the University of Chicago was able to unravel some of the mechanisms that regulate this weight gain. They focused on the relationship between the immune system, gut bacteria, digestion and obesity. They showed how weight gain requires not just caloric overload but also a delicate, adjustable -- and transmissible -- interplay between intestinal microbes and the immune response.

"Diet-induced obesity depends not just on calories ingested but also on the host's microbiome," said the study's senior author Yang-Xin Fu, MD, PhD, professor of pathology at the University of Chicago Medicine. For most people, he said, "host digestion is not completely efficient, but changes in the gut flora can raise or lower digestive efficiency."

So the old adage "you are what you eat" needs to be modified, Fu suggested, to include, "as processed by the microbial community of the distal gut and as regulated by the immune system."

To measure the effects of microbes and immunity, the researchers compared normal mice with mice that have a genetic defect that renders them unable to produce lymphotoxin, a molecule that helps to regulate interactions between the immune system and bacteria in the bowel. Mice lacking lymphotoxin, they found, do not gain extra weight, even after prolonged consumption of a high-fat diet.

On a standard diet, both groups of mice maintained a steady weight. But after nine weeks on a high-fat diet, the normal mice increased their weight by one-third, most of it fat. Mice lacking lymphotoxin ate just as much, but did not gain weight.

The high-fat diet triggered changes in gut microbes for both groups. The normal mice had a substantial increase in a class of bacteria (Erysopelotrichi) previously associated with obesity and related health problems. Mice that lacked lymphotoxin were unable to clear segmented filamentous bacteria, which has previously been found to induce certain immune responses in the gut.

The role of gut microbes was confirmed when the researchers transplanted bowel contents from the study mice to normal mice raised in a germ-free environment -- and thus lacking their own microbiome. Mice who received commensal bacteria from donors that made lymphotoxin gained weight rapidly. Those that got the bacteria from mice lacking lymphotoxin gained much less weight for about three weeks, until their own intact immune system began to normalize their bacterial mix.

When housed together, the mice performed their own microbial transplants. Mice are coprophagic; they eat each other's droppings. In this way, the authors note, mice housed together "colonize one another with their own microbial communities." After weeks together, even mice with the immune defect began to gain weight. They also were able to reduce the presence of segmented filamentous bacteria in their stool.

Moving from normal chow to the high-fat diet initiated a series of related changes, the authors found. First, it altered the balance of microbes in the digestive system. These changes in the microbiome altered the immune response, which then introduced further changes to the intestinal microbial community.

These changes "provide inertia for the obese state," the authors said, facilitating more efficient use of scarce food resources.

"Our results suggest that it may be possible to learn how to regulate these microbes in ways that could help prevent diseases associated with obesity," said Vaibhav Upadhyay, first author of the study and an MD/PhD student working in Fu's laboratory. "We now think we could inhibit the negative side effects of obesity by regulating the microbiota and perhaps manipulating the immune response."

Or, 20 years from now, "when there are 10 billion people living on earth and competing for food, we may want to tilt digestive efficiency in the other direction," Fu added.

The authors cautioned, however, that with more than 500 different strains of bacteria present in the gut, "the precise microbes that promote such weight gain and the specific host responses that foster their growth need to be better established."

The National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association supported this research. Additional authors include Valeriy Poroyko, Tai-jin Kim, Suzanne Devkota, Sherry Fu, Alexei Tumanov, Ekaterina Koroleva, Liufu Deng, Cathryn Nagler and Eugene Chang of the University of Chicago, and Hong Tang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The manuscript is dedicated to the memory of co-author Donald Liu, MD, PhD, who died Aug. 5.

Christian archbishop, priests flee Syria violence

Rebels in Syria claim new video shows their forces shooting down an Army helicopter as it was bombarding a Damascus neighborhood. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

The United States called reports of execution-style slayings by Syrian government forces "brutal" and a?Christian archbishop fled Syria with several priests after their offices were ransacked, news services reported on Monday.

U.S. State?Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that of more than 300 people killed some 150 had been killed in a single location around the Syrian capital Damascus. She cited reports from human rights activists that some were killed point-blank "in the most brutal way at the hands of the regime."?

Syrian opposition activists say as many as 600 people, including women and children, were killed by government forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya.

Also on Monday, fighter planes fired two rockets at targets on the eastern edge of Damascus, opposition activists said, the same day a military helicopter was apparently shot down by rebels.

It was the first time a warplane has struck areas close to the capital, an activist source told Reuters.

Video taken by activists showed a fighter plane swooping in on a built-up area. An explosion is heard and a voice says: "It is firing rockets."

320 found killed in Syria; rebels blame Assad?

Abu Qais, a Sunni Muslim in the Syrian capital, told The Associated Press that six members of his extended family have been killed by gunmen who belong to the minority Alawite sect of President Bashar Assad. The gunmen who grabbed one of his distant cousins called up his family while they were torturing him "so they could hear his screams," said Abu Qais, an anti-Assad activist who spoke on condition his full name not be used for fear of reprisals.

Sectarian slayings between Syria's Sunni majority and the Alawite minority have been a grim reality of Syria's 17-month-old conflict, and they have only accelerated as the country falls into outright civil war. Sunnis have largely backed the uprising against Assad's rule, while the Alawites ? members of an offshoot of Shiism ? have firmly stood behind the regime, where they fill the leadership ranks.

?

The number of people fleeing the fighting in Syria continues to rise with more than 200,000 leaving for neighboring countries because of continuing violence. Government forces continue to shell Aleppo and other suburbs of Damascus. Jonathan Miller Channel 4 Europe reports.

And as tit-for-tat killings have swelled, so has the segregation of the two communities as they flee each other. In Damascus and other cities, Sunnis and Alawites avoid venturing into each other's neighborhoods for fear of being snatched. Some Alawite districts in the capital are now ringed with checkpoints manned not only by security forces but also residents who have taken up arms to protect their homes.

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com?

Those in mixed neighborhoods flee their homes to move into safer enclaves dominated by their community ? whether in the same city or in another part of the country.

"Mutual threats in Damascus have succeeded in triggering migration," said Fateh Jamous, an Alawite activist from Latakia, the Mediterranean coastal city where many Alawites have fled. Latakia itself has so far represented a sort of tense neutral ground ? its population is about half Sunni, half Alawite. "That created a sort of balance of terror. So far, it has been generally peaceful," he said by telephone from Latakia.

Christians, too, are being caught up in the sectarian strife. The Catholic news agency Fides reported that the Melchite Greek Catholic archbishop of Aleppo, Jean-Clement Jeanbart, and a number of priests fled to Lebanon after their offices in Aleppo were ransacked

The Melchite Greek Catholic Church is a community of Middle Eastern Christians who are in full communion with Rome.

Fides said "unidentified groups who want to feed a religious war and drag the Syrian population into sectarian conflicts" attacked the Christian area in the old quarter of Aleppo.

A Byzantine Christian museum and an office of the Maronite Christian faith were also damaged, the report said.

There are several Christian groups in Syria, many of which have been in the region since pre-Islamic times.

Christians make up around 10 percent of the population and many have remained loyal to Assad, fearing that the majority Sunni Muslims would trample on religious rights if they took power.

However, some senior members of the opposition are also Christians.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Telecom Broker Helps Businesses Connect With Virtual Workers

IT decision makers have many questions when looking for lower cost, yet secure branch to branch connectivity, including folding the virtual or home based worker into the corporate network

North Carolina (PRWEB) August 22, 2012

The Telecom Broker has launched an informational customer website what-is-mpls.com to assist IT Managers and CTOs in understanding and pricing the basic options available with secure, fully meshed MPLS VPN wide area networking technologies.

"IT decision makers have many questions when looking for lower cost, yet secure branch to branch connectivity, including folding the virtual or home based worker into the corporate network," says Curtis Burnside with The Telecom Broker.

?I've had so many business owners and IT decision makers ask "what is MPLS" that finally I simply went ahead and wrote a whole website focused on this complex technology," says Burnside, a Certified Telecom Broker.

"Businesses have a great opportunity now to connect with their home based virtual workers via low cost managed ADSL and cable modem MPLS options. by using MPLS protocol, we can extend the corporate LAN and make it seem as if the virtual worker is right in the next room."

"We've recognized that IT managers need vendor agnostic tools to design and price MPLS and converge their telecom services. by putting the voice, data and security all on the same wire, we get tremendous cost savings and ease of management," he adds.

The Telecom Broker provides USA businesses with independent professionals to consult on wide area network communication needs, including MPLS WAN design, before the provider becomes involved. ?This way, the customer gets a square peg in a square hole. MPLS network needs should be defined before they're priced out on a bidding basis with providers, so the customer gets the best value,? says Burnside.

The Telecom Broker is paid by the provider or carrier on a commission basis, only after the customer successfully implements the plan. There are many inherent advantages to customers from this arrangement.

Amber Zuniga, 18, Creates 'The Ultimate Boyfriend Application'

With the first day of classes quickly approaching in this final week of August, 18-year-old Amber Zuniga understood the importance of finding a good back-to-school boyfriend. In an effort to help her fellow single friends distinguish between the studs and duds, she created "the ultimate boyfriend application" -- which quickly went viral on Tumblr and got picked up by bigger media outlets, such as Buzzfeed.

Scroll down to see the larger (and hilarious) image.

The application is "for anyone who might have a crush on someone, or thinks a boy is attractive, or perhaps even has an unhealthy infatuation -- since the application is a tad overboard," Zuniga told The Huffington Post. "But let's not forget Beyonc?. I think she really carried me through the endless hours of strenuous cutting and glueing it took to perfect the application. That woman is gold."

While Zuniga admitted that she has yet to actually use it herself, she assured us that in the future, should a "tall, tan, and handsome guy just waltz into [her] life and offer [her] some french fries," she'll make sure to hand it to him upfront.

And for any single ladies or gents who do not have this foolproof application handy when they spot a potential boyfriend candidate (tsk, tsk), no need to panic -- Zuniga's got you covered.

"If they bring you pizza, they've got potential," she said. "If they let you have the last slice, they're a keeper."

Amen to that.

A paint-by-numbers portrait of changing nation

WASHINGTON (AP) ? We're heavier in pounds and hotter by degrees than Americans of old. We're starting to snub our noses at distant suburbs after generations of burbs in our blood. Our roads and bridges are kind of a mess. There are many more poor, and that's almost sure to get worse.

The oddly American obsession with picking up and moving on ? "this spectacle of so many lucky men restless in the midst of abundance," as Alexis de Tocqueville noted nearly 200 years ago ? has given way to the un-American activity of going nowhere. But check back tomorrow.

Such swirling changes are not fodder for a State of the Union speech, but they are part of the state of the union nonetheless, on the eve of the Republican National Convention opening Monday and the Democratic convention that follows it a week later. The country that President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are vying to lead for the next four years is not quite the same as the one four years ago, not nearly the same as the one further back in time.

Our taste for McMansions, for example, has slightly soured in recent years in favor of more affordable abodes.

We, like, speak differently than our forebears, new twists on the same tongue. LOL.

Soldiers are flowing home from the wars; this is almost what peace looks like.

A paint-by-the-numbers portrait:

___

WHERE WE LIVE

Like much else, where we live is shaped by how ? or whether ? we make a living. But larger forces than that seem to be at work in determining Americans' chosen places.

U.S. cities and closely surrounding areas are experiencing more growth than farther-off suburbs for the first time in at least 20 years. The cost and bother of commuting are part of the reason. The average commuter spends over 30 hours stuck in traffic per year, says the Texas Transportation Institute, up from 14 hours in 1982. That's the time spent going nowhere or at a crawl.

As well, city life is becoming the choice of more young and old people, as the attractions and convenience rival the long-held American dream of affordable home ownership, which usually means farther out.

Meantime, the historic migration of Southern blacks to the North has reversed, with black populations rising in Southern cities and suburbs, especially among the more affluent.

But the overarching recent development in where we live is that we aren't moving much at all.

Mobility is the lowest it's been in the 60 years it has been tracked by the Census Bureau, with only 11.6 percent of the nation's population moving in the past year. That's just over half the level in 1951, the biggest year for Americans on the move, 21.2 percent. More adult children are living with parents because of economic hardship, fewer older people are able to retire to sunny climes and the housing bust further contributed to locking the restless in place.

Average home size dropped 5 percent from 2007 to 2010, to a little under 2,400 square feet. It's still a far cry from the 750-square-foot, one-story, 2-bedroom Levittown prototypes that sparked the suburban boom and brought modest homes within reach of the masses after World War II.

Though they paved paradise and put up housing lots, the U.S. remains heavily treed. One-third of its land area is forested, a proportion that has been stable since the beginning of the past century. But after the devastation of American chestnuts that grew by the billions in Eastern forests and of the elms that gave so many towns an Elm Street, today's forests and urban greenery are not the same as in the past.

Meantime asphalt and iron have fallen into disrepair: Nearly one in four of the country's 605,086 bridges is rated deficient.

___

HOW WE COMMUNICATE

Until World War II in residential areas and well beyond in rural America, telephone party lines were common. If you wanted to make a phone call, you had to wait for Velma down the road to finish gossiping on the same line, interrupt the chitchat to ask her to hang up ? or just cover the speaker and eavesdrop on the juicy details. (Velma was a popular name from the 1890s through the 1930s, then no more). In party-line days, a major technological advance came when Ma Bell developed distinct rings for different homes on the line, so everyone didn't pick up each time the phone jangled.

These days, the dedicated landline that took over from the party line is itself fading, as Americans' favorite gadget, the cellphone, spreads in numbers and smarts.

The number of people with wireless only and no traditional landline phone has grown fourfold since 2005, the government estimates. In 2005, less 8 percent of adults lived in households with only wireless telephones. Now it's more than 32 percent. Nearly nine in 10 adults own a cell.

The day Obama's Democratic convention opened in 2008, Facebook announced its 100 millionth user, a benchmark it actually took longer to reach than its now-overshadowed rival, Myspace. Facebook is closing in on its billionth user, sitting with Twitter as kings of the social-media mountain until something else knocks them off.

___

WHO WE ARE

Fatter. The average woman has gained 18 pounds since 1990, to 160 pounds; the average man is up 16 pounds, to 196, Gallup found.

Poorer as a whole, but richer than during the recession. The value of people's homes, stocks and all other assets stood at $62.9 trillion in March, the latest count, down from $66 trillion before the economy tanked but up from $51.3 trillion at the downturn's depths.

Indebted, but perhaps not up to the eyeballs. Credit card debt has declined about 14 percent since 2008. Americans also have less mortgage debt, but more student debt and auto loans. The savings rate, meantime, climbed to 4.2 percent last year, a big improvement from 1.5 percent in 2005. But then there is the government. It is indebted past the eyeballs.

Hotter: The period from July 2011 to June 2012 was the warmest 12-month stretch on record. Altogether, the contiguous states posted an annual all-season average temperature of 56 degrees in that period, which is 3.3 degrees hotter than either of the years that Obama and Romney were born. The hottest calendar year on record for the U.S. is 1998, at 55.08 degrees, but that may not last this year's swelter and lack of winter. Most of the past 15 years have been among the steamiest on the books, and all 15 were hotter than Romney's birth year, 1947, and Obama's, 1961.

More numerous. The U.S. has 314 million people. The country surpassed 200 million in 1968 and 300 million in 2006.

More diverse. For the first time, more than half the children born in the U.S. are racial or ethnic minorities, and by 2040 or several years after, non-Hispanic whites are expected to become a minority of the population. Along with this trend has come a historic jump in interracial marriages, which now make up an estimated 8.4 percent of marriages, up from 3.2 percent in 1980.

Addicted to texting. Cellphone users sent an average of 13 text messages a day in December 2008, double the number from a year earlier, the government said. More recently, Pew researchers found the average teen sent more than 64 texts a day.

Older. Between 2000 and 2010, the population of people aged 45 to 64 grew by close to one-third as the baby boom generation and those behind it grayed. That has helped to push the median age to 37.2 ? half the population younger than that, half over.

A lot of those young people are named Sophia, the top girl's name for the first time, and Jacob, No. 1 choice for boys for the past 13 years. So long Mary and James, the dominant names over 100 years.

___

WHAT WE THINK:

On the issues of the day, the economy has no near rival atop the list of concerns. Pocketbook matters often rule but Americans were heavily focused on war in the early going of the last campaign. As the recession deepened, though, and now with troops coming home, it's been the economy plain and simple ? the issue ranked important by more than 9 in 10 respondents to an AP-GfK poll out this past week.

About half of us approve of the job Obama is doing, the poll found. About half disapprove. Voters are about evenly split on the race, and among those who lean to one man or the other, very few are open to changing their minds. Obama's years-ago vision of a nation of united states soaring above the divisions of red states and blue states seems a pipe dream in a fractious time.

The sharp lines and stagnant views are evident in public opinion on gun laws, abortion, health care, taxes and the federal budget deficit ? on which polling has long shown wide divergence. The Pew Research Center reports that partisan polarization on basic policy questions is at its highest point in 25 years.

One exception has been support for gay marriage. In May of 2008 as Obama was wrapping up the Democratic nomination, just 40 percent of Americans told Gallup's pollsters same-sex marriages should be recognized by the law as valid. This May, 50 percent said yes to the same question, the most striking shift in social attitudes during Obama's presidency. Still, more than 30 states have passed measures against it and it's frequently a losing issue at the ballot box. There are no united states on this question.

Polarization doesn't stop at politics or policy, either. It appears to be embedded in personal relationships. A pre-convention Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll found Democrats and Republicans tend to be surrounded by fellow partisans ? two-thirds of their friends and family share their party leanings.

Many of us belong to tribes tinted red or blue.

___

WHAT WE EARN

Few could have seen it coming back when Bill Clinton was scrambling to salvage his presidency from the Monica Lewinsky business, but his later years in office are starting to look like one of the economy's golden ages. Unemployment was low, the government miraculously took in what it spent and the stock market marched steadily upward, at least until the bubble burst.

Household income peaked in 1999, at $53,252 in today's dollars, and has declined since, to $49,445 in 2010. That puts households back to where they were in the mid-1990s.

But an even bigger rewind to an earlier time seems to be happening with the poor.

In July, The Associated Press found a broad consensus among economists and scholars that the official poverty rate is on track to reach its highest level in nearly half a century, erasing distinct ? if modest ? gains from the 1960s "war on poverty" that expanded the safety net with the introduction of Medicaid, Medicare and other social welfare programs.

The wealth gap between younger and older has grown into an unprecedented divide. Older people always have more net worth than younger adults on average, but now those 65 and over have 47 times more than adults under 35. It used to be only 10 times more, a quarter-century ago.

Overall, the value of goods and services produced in the country has returned to pre-recession levels, though with 5 million fewer people working. That makes the U.S. more productive and competitive. But when combined with meager income gains during that time, it also suggests we're working harder for roughly the same pay.

___

WHAT WE PAY

Housing prices have dropped by a striking 34 percent since late 2006. That's good if ? only if ? you're buying.

Tuition is up 15 percent at four-year public universities and almost 10 percent at private four-year institutions from 2008 to 2010.

Gas? It's a rollercoaster. The U.S. saw 91 cents a gallon only 13 years ago, during Clinton's presidency. The average price hit $2 in May 2004, $4 in June 2008, then plunged before that year's election, spiked and rollercoastered along, sitting now at $3.74 a gallon.

In 2008, workers paid an average of $3,354 for a year's worth of job-based health insurance, more than double their cost from nine years earlier, the Kaiser Family Foundation reported. In 2011, that average grew to $4,129. Not only did premiums rise, but many more workers were picking up the first $1,000 or more of health care costs as deductibles grew and employers shifted more health costs to employees.

___

WHO WE WERE

Norman Rockwell's America may have come and gone, if it ever existed, but the much younger nation de Tocqueville, the French philosopher, saw in his 1830s travels is still recognizable in its older age. For all the new colors, bold strokes of the past still show.

Want some age-old perspective on why Republicans fought Obama's health care law up to the Supreme Court this year? De Tocqueville wrote: "There is hardly a political question in the United States which does not sooner or later turn into a judicial one."

Both a scold and admirer, he found Americans obsessed with money, tending to "move forward by sudden impulses and short-lived efforts," quick to form agitating associations, reveling in an "always moving scene," loving change because it "seems to give birth only to miracles," and apt to rise from their stitched-from-many-nations roots to light up the world.

You'll hear lots about change if you tune into the conventions. To be seen: whether we still believe in miracles.

Specialty Coffee Roaster J. Martinez ... - Food and Drink Digital ...

NORCROSS, GA, August 15, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Estate coffee supplier J. Martinez & Company Fine Coffees wishes to explain to the public the reasons why smaller roasters are currently experiencing a shortage in Kona coffee supply.

Kona coffee is in short supply everywhere because the coffee berry borer, a very small beetle native to Africa, has been destroying the coffee in the Kona region of Hawaii since September 2010. The coffee borer can wreak havoc on a coffee crop by boring into coffee cherries to lay its eggs. When the eggs hatch, the borer beetle larvae eat the coffee bean, mature inside, and then mate before the females fly to new cherries to lay more eggs. Considering that the beetle's lifespan is very short, several generations can be created quickly and destroy an entire coffee crop.

The coffee berry borer is a common pest in most coffee growing areas, but its presence had not been known in Hawaii before 2010. By this point, as much as 90% of the plants in some Kona plantations have been damaged by the borer beetle. It is believed that over half of the total population of coffee trees in the Kona region has an infestation at this time. This has created an overall shortage in available Kona coffee availability. The Hawaiian government is trying to control the infestation, but it will take a while for the coffee crop to recover.

Making the shortage worse for smaller roasters like J. Martinez & Company are large companies who are grabbing up whatever Kona berries they can. Because these companies are unable to produce the same quality of small batch roasted coffee, the overall quality of available Kona has also suffered from the shortage.

Coffee lovers do have alternatives, however, from areas of the world where the coffee berry borer population is under control. J. Martinez & Company Fine Coffees recommends that Kona fans test out Jamaican blue mountain coffee, which is world famous for its mild flavor and lack of bitterness.

Martinez & Company has Kona coffee back in stock, subscribe to their online newsletter at http://www.martinezfinecoffees.com/newsletters.html.

It's still Summer down here in hot and humid South, which means one thing: BUGS.

From wasps to mosquitos to love bugs to ants. They are abounding. So I was happy to get the chance to review the latest answers to removing ants from your home from Combat Source!

Combat Source has been a leader in pest control for the home for years and years, so you know it is a name you can trust!?

We have an inside cat and an outside dog, not to mentioned a kid who is ALWAYS on the floor with the cat, or playing, so spraying is not something we like to do! This is why gel and baits are better- they are safer for you, your kids and pets!?

So when the ants come a crawlin, the Combat Source Max Ant Gel should be your first line of defense for keeping ants out of your home. You can apply it in cracks, crevices and other hard-to-reach places. It is?formulated to attract ants quickly, while its fast-acting insecticide, Fipronil, starts killing in hours. Worker ants return to the colony and feed the bait to the larvae and to the queen, eliminating the entire ant colony. WIthin a matter of days, the ants are GONE. I used it outside our porch and back door areas, as that was where we saw they ants coming in at.

If you don't like applying gel, then there is the Combat Source Max Ant Bait. They also contain?Fipronil. The ants take it back to the colony, just like the gel.. They are easy-to-use, no-mess, child-resistant and need no activation. You just place them where you have seen ants, and they will work day and night to control the problem killing ants at the source. We placed these inside in the path areas.

The combo definitely worked- NO more ants! Woo hoo!?

Chael Sonnen, Chris Weidman volunteered to take UFC 151 fight with Jon Jones

The UFC decided to cancel UFC 151 after Jon Jones passed on replacement opponents when Dan Henderson had to pull out because of an injury. Two of those opponents spoke up after the news broke on the UFC 151 cancellation.

Chael Sonnen started a Twitter beef with Jones last week after Sonnen announced his move up to light heavyweight. Sonnen took to Twitter again on Thursday.

Sonnen wasn't the only one to offer to step up and fight a five-round, championship fight on Sept. 1. Middleweight Chris Weidman also offered to move up a weight class and take the fight. Weidman was thought to have earned a middleweight title shot, but current champion Anderson Silva will not be fighting again before the end of the year.

Weidman saw a second chance at a title and and called UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

"I heard that Dan Henderson was hurt," Weidman said to MMA Fighting. "I said, 'Wow, I'm not getting the shot at 185, let me get Jon Jones, he's freaking awesome."

Instead, Jones will have an extra few weeks of preparation before a fight with Lyoto Machida at UFC 152.

South Korean court rules Apple infringed on two Samsung patents, fines it $35k; Samsung gets hit too

We have yet another twist in the worldwide patent battle between electronics giants Apple and Samsung, as the Wall Street Journal and Reuters report a Seoul court has ruled in favor of the latter when it came to two patents in a case on its home turf. While it decided that Apple had infringed on two Samsung patents, it also found that Samsung had returned the favor on Apple's "bounceback" design patent, but not on another regarding icon design resulting in damages of about $22,000 Samsung. That's according to WSJ's Evan Ramstad, who also reports that other than the light financial slap on the wrist, the ruling means that the infringing products can no longer be sold in South Korea. The list of affected hardware includes mostly previous gen products like the iPhone 4 and iPad 2, as well as the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus. Asia Economic indicates the two patents Apple was found to have infringed are of the much-disputed standards-essential type relating to the transmission of data. This action doesn't appear to significantly tilt the battlefield in any particular direction, so we'll continue to keep an eye on the jury deliberating in California.
