Measuring the universe?s 'exit door': For the first time, an international team has measured the radius of a black hole

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The point of no return: In astronomy, it's known as a black hole -- a region in space where the pull of gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. Black holes that can be billions of times more massive than our sun may reside at the heart of most galaxies. Such supermassive black holes are so powerful that activity at their boundaries can ripple throughout their host galaxies.

Now, an international team, led by researchers at MIT's Haystack Observatory, has for the first time measured the radius of a black hole at the center of a distant galaxy -- the closest distance at which matter can approach before being irretrievably pulled into the black hole.

The scientists linked together radio dishes in Hawaii, Arizona and California to create a telescope array called the "Event Horizon Telescope" (EHT) that can see details 2,000 times finer than what's visible to the Hubble Space Telescope. These radio dishes were trained on M87, a galaxy some 50 million light years from the Milky Way. M87 harbors a black hole 6 billion times more massive than our sun; using this array, the team observed the glow of matter near the edge of this black hole -- a region known as the "event horizon."

"Once objects fall through the event horizon, they're lost forever," says Shep Doeleman, assistant director at the MIT Haystack Observatory and research associate at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. "It's an exit door from our universe. You walk through that door, you're not coming back."

Doeleman and his colleagues have published the results of their study this week in the journal Science.

Jets at the edge of a black hole

Supermassive black holes are the most extreme objects predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of gravity -- where, according to Doeleman, "gravity completely goes haywire and crushes an enormous mass into an incredibly close space." At the edge of a black hole, the gravitational force is so strong that it pulls in everything from its surroundings. However, not everything can cross the event horizon to squeeze into a black hole. The result is a "cosmic traffic jam" in which gas and dust build up, creating a flat pancake of matter known as an accretion disk. This disk of matter orbits the black hole at nearly the speed of light, feeding the black hole a steady diet of superheated material. Over time, this disk can cause the black hole to spin in the same direction as the orbiting material.

Caught up in this spiraling flow are magnetic fields, which accelerate hot material along powerful beams above the accretion disk The resulting high-speed jet, launched by the black hole and the disk, shoots out across the galaxy, extending for hundreds of thousands of light-years. These jets can influence many galactic processes, including how fast stars form. 'Is Einstein right?'

A jet's trajectory may help scientists understand the dynamics of black holes in the region where their gravity is the dominant force. Doeleman says such an extreme environment is perfect for confirming Einstein's theory of general relativity -- today's definitive description of gravitation.

"Einstein's theories have been verified in low-gravitational field cases, like on Earth or in the solar system," Doeleman says. "But they have not been verified precisely in the only place in the universe where Einstein's theories might break down -- which is right at the edge of a black hole."

According to Einstein's theory, a black hole's mass and its spin determine how closely material can orbit before becoming unstable and falling in toward the event horizon. Because M87's jet is magnetically launched from this smallest orbit, astronomers can estimate the black hole's spin through careful measurement of the jet's size as it leaves the black hole. Until now, no telescope has had the magnifying power required for this kind of observation.

"We are now in a position to ask the question, 'Is Einstein right?'" Doeleman says. "We can identify features and signatures predicted by his theories, in this very strong gravitational field."

The team used a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry, or VLBI, which links data from radio dishes located thousands of miles apart. Signals from the various dishes, taken together, create a "virtual telescope" with the resolving power of a single telescope as big as the space between the disparate dishes. The technique enables scientists to view extremely precise details in faraway galaxies.

Using the technique, Doeleman and his team measured the innermost orbit of the accretion disk to be only 5.5 times the size of the black hole event horizon. According to the laws of physics, this size suggests that the accretion disk is spinning in the same direction as the black hole -- the first direct observation to confirm theories of how black holes power jets from the centers of galaxies.

The team plans to expand its telescope array, adding radio dishes in Chile, Europe, Mexico, Greenland and Antarctica, in order to obtain even more detailed pictures of black holes in the future.

Christopher Reynolds, a professor of astronomy at the University of Maryland, says the group's results provide the first observational data that will help scientists understand how a black hole's jets behave.

"The basic nature of jets is still mysterious," Reynolds says. "Many astrophysicists suspect that jets are powered by black hole spin ... but right now, these ideas are still entirely in the realm of theory. This measurement is the first step in putting these ideas on a firm observational basis."

This research was supported by the National Science Foundation.

(AP) ? "Beasts of the Southern Wild" director Benh Zeitlin is working on his next film ? a Louisiana-made fable about a hidden ecosystem where the aging process is "out of whack" and people can age quickly or very slowly.

Zeitlin's first film, "Beasts," took awards at the Cannes and Sundance film festivals this year. Zeitlin says he would like to use the same production team and cast in the new, yet-to-be-titled project.

The news comes as Zeitlin prepares to receive the New Orleans Film Society's "Celluloid Hero" award, an honor bestowed to industry standouts who have made significant contributions to the art of making films.

Zeitlin will be recognized Thursday at the society's patron party and gala, the main fundraiser for the New Orleans Film Festival, which is Oct. 11-18.

AVANCE-National returns to Dallas where program began in 1972

On Tuesday, September 18th the national staff of AVANCE (ah-vahn-ceh) returned to Dallas, TX; where the agency began in 1972 through the generous support of the M.B. & Edna Zale Foundation. The local Dallas Chapter hosted a site tour of the AVANCE Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP) for the National President and CEO, Richard J. Noriega, representatives from the M.B. & Edna Zale Foundation and other members of the Dallas business and academic community.

The tour offered guests a personal look at what AVANCE is doing to unlock America?s potential through parent and early childhood education of high-need, low-income families. During their trip, Dallas County Judge, Clay L. Jenkins also hosted a dinner for AVANCE honoring the M.B. & Edna Zale Foundation, one of the original supporters of AVANCE. ?AVANCE has certainly gone much farther than we deserve credit for. It?s doing its own thing and doing it very well.? Donald Zale, Director and Chairman Emeritus of the M.B. & Edna Zale Foundation, told guests during the tour.

?It was interesting and amazing to see how the program bridges the gap between parents and children. There are a lot of programs only for children, but to have the parent?s actively involved and knowing what is going on in their children?s lives is really the differentiating factor with AVANCE,? commented Regina James-Dorsey, Assistant Director of Career Services at Southern Methodist University.

The original AVANCE pilot program, the Mother-Infant Program, conceptualized by Cornell University graduate students of Dr. Urie Bronfenbrenner evolved into what is now known as the AVANCE PCEP. The free, nine-month program consists of weekly three hour classes that span the school calendar from September to May. The program provides early childhood education for the children while parents attend classes to learn how to become their child?s first and most important teacher. The AVANCE PCEP also offers home visits, transportation, advocacy and meals making it one of the most comprehensive bilingual family intervention models in the nation.

Dr. Jon K. Rice, Principal of the John F. Kennedy Learning Center, with AVANCE President and CEO, Richard J. Noriega.

AVANCE President Richard J. Noriega reflected on the trip stating, ?It is always a pleasure to visit our sites, meet with the families and interact with our dedicated educators. Our goal is to continue to make a lasting impact in the communities we serve. Eventually, we would like to expand AVANCE-Dallas to serve families in Fort Worth ISD. We are witnessing positive results with AVANCE-Dallas child graduates out-performing their peers in critical subject areas upon completing the AVANCE program.?

With support from foundations, grants, corporate and individual donors, AVANCE provides services at over 150 sites across 11 states.? AVANCE will continue to expand in the coming year via their Unlocking America?s Potential Project.

Food from the garden. (Sidra Forman)

?My food is very clean, ingredient driven and healthy by nature. The best food for you happens to be the best tasting. You don?t need to sacrifice one or the other.?

For Sidra, food was what she had always done, though informally and at home with her family. She briefly practiced law before falling into her first foodie venture: a restaurant she started with her classically trained chef husband and front-of-house-manager brother, called Ruppert?s. Located on 7th?Street in a time ? the mid-90s ? before new businesses began opening on 7th?Street, their forward-thinking food philosophy matched their status as urban pioneers.

Sidra and her husband focused on ingredients, imparting to their guests the idea that the most delicious meals are very ingredient-driven, and that meat could be merely a foil for vegetables.

?So that means best available ingredients ? often means local, but doesn?t always mean local.? If I can get a beautiful white truffle from Italy I?m not going to not serve it because it?s not local. I know that sometimes I can find or purchase local chanterelles, but the season out in Oregon is long, and I have a great connection with a mushroom hunter out there, and I?m not going to not use them.?

After eight years at Ruppert?s, Sidra and her husband closed the restaurant and she turned her attention to flowers, which, she says, is the current centerpiece of her business.

Following the same ?ingredient-driven? and ?know your source? style, Sidra provides centerpieces and arrangements for weddings, corporate events, and parties, mostly through word of mouth and her website. Sidra sources her flowers from a variety of places: she grows some, including peonies, daisies, roses, and herbs and greens used as filler for arrangements; she buys some from local farms and wholesalers; and she purchases others from as far away as co-op farms in South America and the Dutch Auction, where she has a broker on call and can have flowers at her doorstep in two days. Working directly with her sources eliminates not only days from the process, but also increases the variety she can choose from ? and virtually ensures she is going to get the best available.

"garden)

Flowers from Forman?s garden. (Caroline Tran)

Similarly, Sidra knows where her food comes from ? meaning, in many cases, she knows the farmers who grew it. For example, when asked where she grocery shops, the answer is complex: her own garden, local farmers markets, Hana Japanese Market (17th?and U Streets NW), wholesale dry goods purveyor International Gourmet, Whole Foods, and home delivery from an Amish farmers? cooperative in Pennsylvania.

Forman?s career is full of diverse and multi-dimensional projects that lead tangentially to more projects, keeping her moving quickly from one thing to another. She has consulted on restaurants including old favorites like Perry?s and now-shuttered Viridian and Vegetate, and also found a successful career in food writing. With a longtime nutritionist friend, she has worked on books for lifestyle guru (and Oprah favorite) Bob Greene, including developing the recipes for several of his books.

But her favorite project and the one of which she is most proud, is helping to start the farm at Walker Jones Education Campus. She describes it as a real community effort, with neighbors, teachers, a librarian, and a principal taking over a huge piece of land, putting in some ?crazy manual labor?, pulling some strings, and ending up with a functioning vegetable garden for the school. Today the food is used in the cafeteria, sold at farmers markets, and taken home for dinner by the students.

?For those of us who can afford to buy food we have lots of options, unfortunately that?s not available for everyone,? Forman said.

Sidra is particularly tied to the neighborhood and has lived on 6th?Street NW, ?on the edge of Borderstan for 14 years. She has seen not only the arrival of Whole Foods in Logan Circle but the changes, both good and bad, that come with new neighbors and condo developments. Surprisingly, on her block the majority of neighbors have been there even longer than her family has ? meaning not only do they all know each other, they do the neighborly things most of us only wish for: warning each other about parking tickets, looking out for crime and apologizing in the one instance she says there was a break in ? apologizing for not seeing anything. ?It feels like people have your back,? she says.

Not one to rest on her success, Sidra has a book proposal in the works with an agent in New York on a ?new food trend? (she is vegan herself), including research on the science behind it and new recipes. She is busy pulling together flowers for multiple weddings each weekend, and? hosts monthly ?home restaurant? dinner parties serving food such as wood grilled quail with parsley; lamb sausage with fig, arugula, chestnut, balsamic vinegar and roasted garlic; and white peach with tomato and basil.

Plus, she has a 13-year-old ballerina daughter to worry about. It seems like a full plate for most people, but Sidra says it works due to the flexibility she has with her job.? She works a lot, all night sometimes, but can stop and take time to eat dinner with her family. ?I feel very lucky that I have been able to figure out a life that merges these two things.?

Military Channel's THE BROKAW FILES Reflects on Iconic Moments in History with Fresh Insight from Legendary Journalist Tom Brokaw

-- World Premiere Airs Monday, October 15 at 10 PM E/P with Six New Episodes --

(Silver Spring, Md.) Thousands of snapshots make up the composite picture of Tom Brokaw?s prolific NBC News documentaries. For more than 40 years, Brokaw has held a front-row seat to history while traveling the world to capture pivotal events like Ronald Reagan during his final days in the Oval Office; World War II veterans returning to the beaches of Normandy 40 years after D-Day; and a day in the life of young crew members aboard a nuclear aircraft carrier deployed to Afghanistan. Now, in the Military Channel?s new series THE BROKAW FILES, the legendary NBC News anchor and best-selling author revisits the most iconic moments from his award-winning broadcasts to reflect on those events, and to provide his own fresh perspectives, including personal stories he?s never shared, that place these seminal events into a modern context. Produced by NBC News? Peacock Productions, the six-episode first season of THE BROKAW FILES premieres Monday, October 15 at 10 PM E/P. Subsequent episodes will premiere Tuesdays at 10 PM.

?I am very excited to have the opportunity to present these important lessons of history on the Military Channel. They continue to inform and instruct us in ways that are at once relevant to the 21st century. It?s a privilege to be associated with such a bold initiative,? Brokaw said.

?We are really excited to have Tom Brokaw, one of the greatest broadcast journalists of our generation, join us at the Military Channel,? said Ed Hersh, SVP of Content Strategy for the Military Channel. ?THE BROKAW FILES encompasses everything we want the channel to be, with fascinating stories of the military as well as new insights into events that have shaped the modern world.?

The world premiere of THE BROKAW FILES anchors Military Channel?s ?RED HOT AND NEW WEEK? of special programming airing Monday, October 15 to Saturday, October 20. Six additional series and episodes premiering throughout the week will reveal even more missions and top-secret technologies and breathe life into the important American histories that Military Channel?s viewers crave.

Episodes of THE BROKAW FILES include:

  • Return to D-Day Premieres Monday, October 15 at 10 PM E/P
On the 60th anniversary of Normandy?s storming, Brokaw revisited the battlefield and spoke with three Americans who survived D-Day but are still dealing with the horrific memories. In this episode, Brokaw reflects on his visit to Normandy on that poignant anniversary, recalls when the WWII memorial opened in 2004, and shares his hope that the young people of today will strive to serve their country and give their best to make this nation great.
  • Ronald Reagan
In an interview conducted just two days before Reagan left office, Brokaw sat down with the beloved out-going president to reflect on his life, his accomplishments, and his vision of the future. Now, Brokaw looks back at that remarkable interview to ponder how Reagan, who some credit as being ?the architect of modern conservatism,? framed the Republican platform on which all future party candidates built their campaigns.
  • USS Stennis Aircraft Carrier
Ten years ago, Brokaw stepped on deck of the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis to learn what a day in the life is like for the 5,000-member crew aboard a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier going into war against al-Qaeda. This year, the Stennis returned home to a heroes? welcome after a 7-month deployment in Afghanistan. While thousands have come and gone in the decade in between his visits, Brokaw finds that the sense of honor, duty, camaraderie, and patriotism remains aboard.
  • The Greatest Generation
Inspired by a trip to Normandy on the 40th anniversary of D-Day, Brokaw became fascinated by the cultural shifts that occurred as WWII soldiers returned home to America to rebuild their lives and their nation before passing the torch to the next generation. Now, Brokaw reflects on the modern-day effort to document heroic and untold stories of this generation and the importance of preserving the rich history of a defining era.
  • 9/11 Air Traffic Controllers
In the chaos of 9/11, the men and women controlling the communication in the skies above America had to piece together a tragic puzzle. One year after the attacks, Brokaw sat down for an exclusive interview with these heroic air traffic controllers to discuss the events of this unimaginable attack on America?s homeland and the lessons learned. More than a decade later, Military Channel catches up with one of those controllers about how the events of 9/11 forever changed the industry and the lives of air traffic controllers.
  • The Commander in Chief
Brokaw goes behind the tour route?s velvet ropes to experience a day in the life of a U.S. president. Brokaw shadowed the Clinton White House at the one hundred-day mark of his presidency, and discussed war strategy with George W. Bush in an exclusive interview aboard Air Force One. Brokaw now discusses the legacy of these presidents as well as their vastly different approaches to life after the White House.

THE BROKAW FILES is produced exclusively for the Military Channel by NBC News? Peacock Productions with executive producer Colleen Halpin. For NBC News? Peacock Productions, Benjamin Ringe and Knute Walker are executive producers and Sharon Scott is executive in charge of production. For Military Channel, Max Culhane is executive producer, Sara Kozak is senior vice president of production, Ed Hersh is senior vice president of content strategy, and Henry Schleiff is president and general manager.

This week on the Balance in Legal Education listser,?Larry Krieger?at Florida State University School of Law provided?a link to a website that may be of interest to ASP'ers.? I have included Larry's listserv post below.? Thank you, Larry, for the resource.?(Amy Jarmon)

"FSU (main university, not the law school) just distributed this link, which connects to many, many fascinating people and topics regarding ?contemplative practices? (and education).? The scope is broad, depending on the links selected ? broad in the sense of practices included (meditation, contemplation, reflection, mindfulness, dance, writing, etc.) and ways of integrating such into a course or program for students.?? These are all eminently qualified educators and professionals, with quite different (but not inconsistent) approaches and perspectives.? Enjoy.? Larry

Featurecam software now supports 64-bit computers

Featurecam 2011 incorporates support for 64-bit computers, improved data exchange from a wider range of design software, the ability to use stock models and new strategies across the complete program, from turning to five-axis precision machining.

The program also features a more modern interface to simplify programming.

As the first release to support 64-bit hardware, Featurecam 2011 will be faster than any previous version.

This 64-bit technology removes the memory limitations of 32-bit computers, allowing more efficient toolpath generation, especially for companies precision machining large or complex parts.

User productivity has also been increased by extending the use of the latest multi-threading technologies available in recent hardware.

In addition, improved memory management within the software further reduces calculation times, with the greatest benefits again coming when programming larger or more complex components.

The improved data exchange has been achieved by enabling Delcams Exchange software to be used as an additional import mechanism so that all the formats supported by Exchange can be imported into Featurecam.

These include direct translations from systems such as Catia V5, Siemens NX and Solid Edge, Pro/Engineer, Autocad Inventor, Solidworks and Rhino, as well as support for standard formats such as Parasolid, ACIS, IGES and Step.

Support for the use of stock models is being added progressively, starting with Z-level roughing operations.

The software eliminates air cutting more easily than other methods, saving programming time, and generates more efficient toolpaths to reduce precision machining times.

The main enhancement for turning is the addition of a new style of finishing that uses separate passes to cut the faces and the diameters of the component.

This approach gives a better surface finish, improved tool life and more efficient clearance of the chips generated during the first pass over the part, according to Delcam.

Fully automated de-burring and chamfering is now available when programming 2- or 2.5-axis parts.

The ability to incorporate chamfers, even when they were not shown in the original CAD model, was added in Featurecam 2010.

The automation of this option will allow faster programming of these finishing operations.

Another two-axis enhancement is the ability to precision machining parts larger than the travel of the precision machining tool.

If the precision machining has a table that can index around the Z axis, Featurecam can divide the component into pieces and generate the required series of precision machining operations.

Finish precision machining of flat areas has been made more efficient with improved detection of these surfaces.

Featurecam will then automatically add the appropriate extra Z-level into the toolpath to give accurate finishing.

This option will be most beneficial when precision machining a series of pockets with flat bottoms at different heights.

Over recent releases, the milling capabilities within Featurecam have been enhanced through the incorporation of strategies from Delcams Powermill system for high-speed and five-axis precision machining.

This has continued in the 2011 version with the incorporation of Delcams Race Line Machining strategy into Featurecam.

With this approach to offset precision machining, the roughing passes are smoothed out progressively as the toolpaths move further from the main form.

For five-axis precision machining, more options have been added to the collision avoidance functionality.

These give the user more control over the movements chosen by the software to avoid potential problems and so will help to reduce sudden changes in direction.

Featurecam 2011 also includes improvements in the more fundamental process of five-axis drilling, with options to program and edit five-axis hole creation, even when the items are supplied as simple circles in space rather than fully defined solids.

Programming of wire EDM has also been improved with the ability to work directly from solid models in a similar way to Featurecams milling, turning and drilling options.

In addition, an automatic ordering command is designed to make it easier to combine operations needed to produce different features, while improved control over retract moves will simplify the programming of four-axis wire EDM equipment.

iPhone 5 is easier to repair than the iPhone 4S, says iFixit

In the past, Apple has made little effort to allow iPhone owners to repair their devices themselves. IFixit now gives the new iPhone 5 a?7 out of 10 in terms of repairability.

By Brian Chacos,?LAPTOP Mag / September 21, 2012

A dissected iPhone 5.

Apple's reputation for building hard-to-fix devices didn't dissuade hordes of people from preordering the iPhone 5 or camping outside of Apple Stores early this morning, and it turns out that's a good thing. The die-hard tinkerers over at iFixit hopped on a plane to Melbourne, Australia to get their hands (and prying screwdrivers) on the iPhone 5 before anybody else, and after stripping Apple's newest handset down to the core, the gadget gurus report that?the iPhone 5 is actually easier to repair than the iPhone 4S.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

It isn't all rainbows and sunshine, however. IFixit drops the iPhone 5's repairability rating to 7 out of 10 for a few niggling design choices. The iPhone 5 continues Apple's tradition of using unorthodox pentalobe screw to lock down the outer case, while several internal components are joined to a single ribbon cable, which will increase the cost of repair if just one of those components kick the bucket.

That eye-popping Retina display is another concern: "The front glass, digitizer, and LCD are all one component, thereby increasing cost of repair," the iFixit team writes.

On the plus side, the front-to-back construction of the phone makes removing the display incredibly easy -- assuming you know what you're doing, of course -- and accessing the battery simple. Previous iterations of the iPhone made removing those components a headache.

The logic board, speaker and vaunted 8-megapixel lift out easily as well, and heavy users will appreciate the new metal support bracket found behind the home button, which iFixit says "should not only increase longevity, but also make replacing the home button a lot less of a hassle." A pair of Qualcomm modems supply cellular connectivity for the phone.

All in all, it looks like the iPhone 5 is a winner inside and out -- as long as you have a pentalobe screwdriver, that is.

APNewsBreak: US surge troops out of Afghanistan

(AP) ? Nearly two years after President Barack Obama ordered 33,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan to tamp down the escalating Taliban violence, the last of those surge troops have left the country, U.S. officials said Thursday.

The withdrawal, which leaves 68,000 American forces in the warzone, comes as the security transition to Afghan forces is in trouble, threatened by a spike in so-called insider attacks in which Afghan Army and police troops, or insurgents dressed in their uniforms, have been attacking and killing U.S. and NATO forces.

And it's called into question the core strategy that relies on NATO troops working shoulder to shoulder with Afghans, training them to take over the security of their own country so the U.S. and its allies can leave at the end of 2014 as planned.

The number of U.S. forces there peaked at about 101,000 last year, and they have been coming out slowly over the past several months.

The surge was aimed at beating back the Taliban to give the Afghan government and its security forces the time and space to take hold. The key goal was to ensure that the Taliban did not regain a foothold in the country that could allow it once again to become a safe haven for terror groups. And there was hope that Taliban members would be willing to come to the peace table.

Military commanders say the war strategy is on track and that they have made broad gains against the Taliban, wresting control of areas where the insurgents once had strong footholds. And U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has characterized the insider attacks as the last gasp of a desperate insurgency.

But other top military leaders, including U.S. Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are worried about the impact of the attacks on the troops. Dempsey called them a "very serious threat" to the war campaign and has declared that "something has to change."

Lenovo axes Android App Shop

Business-types, Lenovo pondered, needed their own App Store Shop, dedicated to selling business-only applications to those strutting around looking serious in their polyester suits. It seems that such demand never materialized, however, with the company shuttering the outlet only six months after its launch and pointing users in the direction of Google Play instead. While the bulk of the apps purchased in that time will still work around 90 that used the store's license management system will cease to function on November 2nd, a list of which you can find at the source link.

How bumblebees find efficient routes without a GPS: Bees use trial and error to select optimal route

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Scientists from Queen Mary, University of London have tracked bumblebees for the first time to see how they select the optimal route to collect nectar from multiple flowers and return to their nest.

In a paper published Sept. 18 in PLOS Biology, the scientists, working with the Harmonic Radar Group at Rothamsted Research, were able to use radar tracking to show how bumblebees discover flowers, learn their location and use trial and error to find the most efficient route between flowers over large distances.

Professor Lars Chittka and Dr Mathieu Lihoreau from Queen Mary's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences and colleagues set up five artificial flowers in a 1km diameter field. Each flower was fitted with motion-triggered webcams and had landing platforms with drops of sucrose in the middle*.

"Using mathematical models, we dissected bees' learning process and identified how they may decipher this optimal solution without a map. Initially, their routes were long and complex, revisiting empty flowers several times," Dr Lihoreau explained.

"But, as they gained experienced, the bees gradually refined their routes through trial and error. Each time a bee tried a new route it increased its probability of re-using the new route if it was shorter than the shortest route it had tried before. Otherwise the new route was abandoned and another was tested.

"After an average of 26 times each bee went foraging, which meant they tried about 20 of the 120 possible routes, they were able to select the most efficient path to visit the flowers, without computing all the possibilities."

Professor Chittka and colleagues have previously shown that bees were able to learn the shortest route possible to navigate between flowers in the lab but this is the first time they have been able to observe this behaviour in natural conditions and to describe how bees may optimise their routes.

"The speed at which they learn through trial and error is quite extraordinary for bumblebees as this complex behaviour was thought to be one which only larger-brained animals were capable of," Professor Chittka said.

"Interestingly, we also found that if we removed a flower, bees continued looking at that location -- even if it was empty for an extended period of time. It seems bees don't easily forget a fruitful flower."

The scientists used motion-triggered web cams and tiny bumblebee-mounted radar transponders to track the bumblebees. The recordings on the flowers showed that bees exhibited considerable individuality -- each one had a favoured arrival and departure direction, different from the other bees.

Head of Computational and Systems Biology at Rothamsted Research, Professor Chris Rawlings, added: "This is an exciting result because it shows that seemingly complex behaviours can be described by relatively simple rules which can be described mathematically.

"This means we can now use mathematics to inform us when bee behaviour might be affected by their environment and to assess, for example, the impact of changes in the landscape."

*To keep the bees' focus on the artificial flowers, the experiments were done in October, when natural sources of nectar and pollen were scarce. To make the bees want to find all five flowers, each sucrose drop was only enough to fill one fifth of a bumblebee's crop. And to keep the bees from finding one foraging site from another visually, the flowers were arranged in a pentagon that was 50 m on each side, which is more than three times as far as bumblebees can see.

Ukraine opposition says libel law "death of journalism"

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainian opposition parties sounded the alarm on Wednesday over a move by President Viktor Yanukovich's allies in parliament to reinstate defamation as a crime, saying it was aimed at further curbing the free press ahead of an election next month.

The draft law, which would provide for prison terms of up to five years for offenders, was rushed through its first reading on Tuesday by deputies of Yanukovich's Party of the Regions and their allies who hold the majority in parliament.

It would apply to anyone, including the media, who spread "deliberately untrustworthy information" which denigrated a person, hurt their honor and dignity or undermined their business reputation.

The proposal to return the old Soviet law to the statute books 11 years after it was removed came as opposition parties marshaled their forces for an October 28 parliamentary election which - with key opposition figures such as former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko in jail - promises to be an acrimonious contest.

The United States and other Western governments say moves to curb media criticism inside the country form part of a gradual back-sliding on democracy and a trend towards greater authoritarianism in the country since Yanukovich came to power in February 2010.

Apparently reacting to growing complaints by the independent media, Yanukovich told a meeting of regional officials that exerting pressure on the media was unacceptable.

"If any such complaints are made to you, you must react to them quickly and not in any way allow the media to be put under pressure," he said, according to the presidential website.

But opposition parties said the proposed law, which has to clear a second reading and then be signed by Yanukovich to become effective, was directed at the activities of the few remaining free media outlets in the former Soviet republic.

"It is crystal clear that the authorities will use the law to suppress the remnants of democracy in the Ukrainian media," said a statement by the united opposition, which includes Tymoshenko's party, Batkivshchyna (Fatherland).

'PARANOID FEAR'

"This is the death of Ukrainian journalism and President Viktor Yanukovich with his paranoid fear and thirst for power is personally responsible for this," it said.

"If this rule goes through, it would lead to a third of the journalists going to jail and part of the opposition too," Mykola Tomenko, a deputy from Tymoshenko's party, told journalists.

Apart from potentially shielding politicians, the law could put Ukraine's super-wealthy entrepreneurs further beyond the reach of media criticism. Many Ukrainian oligarchs, some of whom bankroll political parties but rarely give press interviews, have shown themselves quick to threaten legal action or file lawsuits in foreign courts.

WBC world heavyweight boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko, who heads the opposition Udar (Punch) party, said the move was an attempt to "shut journalists' mouths and force them to work in conditions where the authorities are either doing well, or doing very well or great, and all the rest is slander."

"If today's compromised and degraded parliament supports it (the law) we will change this shameful act in the first session of the newly-elected parliament," Klitschko said.

The Party of the Regions, defending the move, said criminal liability for defamation was provided for in the legislation of many Western countries. It added that it was following the example of Russia, which has also returned defamation to the statute books as a criminal offence.

Independent media outlets say they are facing increased harassment from the authorities in the run-up to the October election.

The independent TVi station, which is often critical of the Yanukovich leadership, says it was the subject of a raid by tax police last July.

A tax evasion case against TVi's chief executive has since been dropped. But the station says local cable companies have come under pressure to either give it up or move it to more expensive packages, significantly cutting its viewer base.
